Fixing the No Poo Hair

As mentioned before, I've been exploring my 'no poo' (no shampoo and conditioner) options recently. I'm trying out the baking soda and vinegar method on my hair. Each time I've washed my hair this way, I've experienced a variety of results. A few times my hair has felt pretty gunky. Only once or twice it has felt mostly good after getting out of the shower.

At first, since my hair was gunky after using the ACV (apple cider vinegar) rinse, I thought maybe my hair didn't need it. The last two times I've washed my hair with baking soda, I haven't used the ACV rinse. My hair felt clean, but for some reason, it just never felt like it was drying all the way. And the strands were sticking together. I wear my hair long and straight most of the time, and talk about flat with this new system!!!

I washed my hair last night with baking soda and rinsed it with the ACV rinse. For 2-3 days prior, I had been mulling around in my head the idea that I was not using ENOUGH ACV, rather than too much. I have a lot of hair. It's probably 2 feet long at present, and though it is fine and shiny, it is very thick. I run through conditioner pretty fast because it's hard to work a small amount into my thick hair. So I decided that if I had to, I would use up the 1.5 pints of ACV rinse that I had left in the shower. After rinsing the baking soda out, I poured little bits of the vinegar rinse on my head and tried to massage it into my hair before it ran to the bottom of the strands. I went from one side of my head to the other at least three times doing this. Then I leaned over and poured more onto the long part of my hair and scrunched and twirled and rubbed it in. I let it sit for a short moment and then rinsed well with water.

It worked!!! I went to bed with wet hair and to my astonishment, it felt all dried out this morning! It was de-tangled, manageable, and felt light and free, just like it used to with my favorite shampoo and conditioner. All of this worry about if I had hard water, and if my hair was never going to be the same and if I'm doomed to use chemicals to keep it manageable faded away the instant I ran my fingers through it this morning. I am saved!! No chemicals and no bad hair days!

I'm only having to wash my hair 2-3 times a week with this method. So at 3 tablespoons of baking soda a week and 1 cup of apple cider vinegar per week, I'm saving quite a bit of money. Most regular size shampoos and conditioners only last me a month, and using all natural, organic stuff can run you a good amount of money. It will take me forever to run through this Costco size baking soda I have at home at that rate. Also, a quart of Bragg's ACV is usually around $5, and there are 8 cups in a quart. That's 2 months per quart, so about $30 per year. With the organic products, I was spending a minimum of $20 per month with shampoo and conditioner combined! And I probably won't use quite that much ACV per week, anyway. I'm very excited about this, especially since doing something more natural is actually saving me money, rather than costing me more. A lot of times it seems to be the other way around. :(

So if you've tried no poo and your hair is feeling sticky after your shower, try using more vinegar rinse. See if it helps. The recipe I used this time was a 1/3 cup vinegar in 1 quart water. I can't wait to do it in my daughters' hairs!

Of Elemental Importance

So now we are on to elements. Most elements are natural. They are defined as substances that cannot be broken down into any other substance. It's kinda like prime numbers. The numbers 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, and 13 cannot be divided evenly by any smaller numbers. Elements basically only consist of atoms, and are not made by combining any other substances together. Elements are what combine to create other substances.

Each atom in an element contains a specific amount of protons, which is what is used to determine the "atomic number".

If you've never heard of it, there is a chart called the Periodic Table of Elements. It lists all of the 118 known elements. There are 92 elements on the Table that are found in nature, 22 that are lab created, and 4 that are theoretical, which means they are yet to be found or created.

In the study of essential oils, it will be important to understand the atomic weights of elements, because they affect the fragrance, the consistency, and the length of time an oil has an effect on the body. The atomic weight also determines whether or not an essential oil is able to pass through the blood-brain barrier.

The 'No Poo" Hair Saga

So I'm trying to save a few cents and not put yuck chemicals on my scalp by going "no poo" (no shampoo). So far it's a trial and error situation. I've looked online in all sorts of places. There are lots of blogs on the subject, with various stories on what works best. Evidently, everyone has a little different experience, depending on their water, body chemistry, etc. I haven't used shampoo or conditioner for 2 weeks now, so I'm only a fraction into the change-over according to most. From what I can tell, it usually takes 6-8 weeks for your hair to totally settle into the new routine. I've tried using baking soda first, and then an apple cider vinegar rinse, but for some reason the ACV leaves my hair feeling kinda chunky. I don't know if I'm using too much or too little. I've changed the amounts a little, just to see if I can find the right mix. The most common recipe I've found for the ACV rinse is 1 tablespoon ACV to 1 cup water. I've also seen 2 tablespoons ACV to 1 cup water, and 1/2 tablespoon ACV to 1 cup water.

What I think I'll do next time, is just skip the rinse. I've read in a few different places that you don't have to use the rinse every time you wash. Last night I used the baking soda on my scalp and then the ACV rinse on my hair only, and the hair on the top of my head has been nicely manageable today. It might be that I have oily enough hair not to need the vinegar rinse all the time. I'll try it and find out.

For the baking soda mix, I'm mixing 1 tablespoon baking soda to 1 cup water. This seems to be the same recipe almost everywhere I look. I don't think you have to use the whole cup of mix if you have less hair, but you still have to use the same amounts of the ingredients no matter what.

It definitely gets rid of the natural oil build up on my scalp, and like I mentioned, my hair was very nice today after using it last night and not following with the vinegar rinse.

I did think I would try to just use water to rinse my hair from now on, using nothing to clean the oils off. Some people have dry enough hair to actually do that! I'm not sure I'll be able to do that, at least not in the summer time. I did order a natural bristle hair brush so that I will be distributing my natural oils down the hair shaft when I brush now.

That will probably help with the build up on my scalp, too. I used to use a natural bristle brush when I was in school, and it just disappeared one time at a friend's house I suppose. My hair is pretty thick, so it will take some getting used to, but it used to work fine, so I'm sure it will again.

If you are willing to try this, or have been doing it already for a while, please let me know your tricks of the trade and your experiences!!

The Biochemistry Dud

You may or may not have noticed that I tend to be very emphatic that allopathic or traditional medicine is not the way to go, but that I'm not personally offended by the doctors of that type. There are a few different reasons why, and what is written below is just one of them.

Most allopathic doctors and career biologists are limited in their educations to "biochemistry" as they call it, which is pretty much based on Lavoisier's law. Even mental and psychological phenomena are commonly reduced to chemistry, since that is their area of expertise. The electromagnetic properties of humans (and other objects and creatures on earth) are usually ignored or not recognized as valid, because they are energy, which is not included in the study of chemistry. This is normally the basis for drugs being prescribed for nearly everything under the sun.

Chemistry is a very important part of life processes, but not all life processes obey the rules of chemistry. The effects of essential oils on the human body do not obey the laws of chemistry, which is one reason why the same oil cannot be prescribed for the same ailment every single time.

We'll be exploring this issue further.

5 Sumos in a Chair

I started Chapter 3 - Basic Chemistry Made Easy on p 78 of "The Chemistry of Essential Oils Made Simple" today.

Dr. Stewart modifies the definition of chemistry as follows: "Chemistry is the study of electrical exchanges between atoms [which are mass] involving only their shells of electrons and is not directly concerned with activities involving their nuclei."

Matter is made up of mass (or weight) and occupies space. People are matter. In contrast, energy does not have mass, and does not occupy space. Light is energy. You could shine a ton of flashlights on the same spot on a wall without any interference from any of the beams of light, but you cannot fit a ton of people in one chair. Physics is the study of energy.

Matter is composed of electrons, protons and neutrons. Electrons have a negative electrical charge and weigh nothing. Protons have a positive electrical charge, and weigh just less than neutrons. For chemistry purposes, neutrons and protons are generally given the same weight.

Though electrons weigh less in mass than protons, the negative charge is as strong as the positive charge of protons, and there are always the same number of electrons and protons in any element, which keeps the elements stable. Basically, x-x=0 (no charge, same as neutrons).

A man named Lavoiser who is normally called the "Father of Chemistry" wrote a law that states, "Nothing is lost. Nothing is created. Everything is transformed." After the discovery of natural radioactivity, the laws of conserving energy and conserving matter were changed to state that matter and energy are equivalent to each other. This is why Einstein's formula works: E=mc2 (Energy=mass x speed of light squared).

Floral Erotica

I know, I'm probably failing miserably at coming up with catchy titles. I must admit I had fun with this one, cuz words like that always make ppl just a tad uncomfortable, except for smooth talking men. lol

This was a large section, divided into a few parts. I'll try to keep it simple. This section is about how essential oils play roles in plant reproduction. Most of us know that a pollen exchange is necessary for plants to reproduce. The following information tells us how essential oils help get pollen from one plant to another.

WIND-
A few plants use the wind to distribute pollen, but not very many.

SIGHT-
Most plants use this method to attract cross pollinators (i.e. insects, animals, and humans even). I think it was mentioned before that large essential oil molecules called tetraterpenes can be responsible for the color of a plant. These molecules are not often found in extracted essential oils, cuz they are so large. They normally remain in the plant after it has been distilled for oil. Usually bright colors are from pigments, or light refracting objects rather than essential oils, though. The pigments can be used to dye things, of course, but if the plant has light refracting objects to make its color, you'll end up with a clear goo on your fingers after pinching it. These microscopic light refracting objects (probably different shapes of prism-like structures) absorb the invisible UV rays we're so afraid of, and re-emit them in lower frequencies that are visible to the eye in a brighter-than-the-actual-color way. Brightening laundry soaps do the same thing: they trick our eyes. The colors aren't actually getting brighter, just the shapes of the tiny prisms make them look that way to us.

SMELL-
Many insects (the most common form of cross pollinator) are either color blind or totally blind. So even if a plant uses sight to attract pollinators, it will often employ the other, more common, method of attraction, which is smell. Insects have smelling organs at lots of different places on their bodies. Some even have them on their feet, like the common housefly (which explains why those pesky irritants like to walk all over our picnic food after they've already been standing for hours on doggie doo).

The fragrances put out by plants normally imitate the sex pheromones of different kinds of animals, and usually come from their essential oils. The pheromone molecules waft in the air and the animals are drawn to them for procreation. For example, catnip emits the same lactone pheromone that female cats emit when they're in heat, which is what draws especially male cats to it. The pollen gets on the fur of the cats and travels with them to other plants.

Throughout the day, flowers will put out slightly changed fragrances in order to attract different types of pollinators at different times. Some flowers put out especially strong fragrances at night to attract nocturnal pollinators.

In exchange for these cross pollinators accepting invitations to visit, they receive food and nutrients. A lot of insects feed on pollen and that is their reward for "answering the call". Some plants have hollow tubular structures which store nectar at the bottom. Nectar is basically sugar water, and the plants don't really use it. It's specifically a treat for birds and butterflies or moths, and in return for the food, the animals spread the pollen that sticks to them while they're feeding.

Essential oils are key in this imitation of animal sex hormones to attract cross pollinators, which is why they have been the base of perfumes for millennia. They attract insects and other animals, and they attract us as well.

Wounds & Antiseptics

When plants are wounded, the sticky resin comes out. I remember as a kid, we used to pinch plants to make dark spots, or dig our nails into them. I don't think they were aloe, but I remember some plants had these long shoots that would push out this clear, sticky, stringy fluid when we broke the ends off. We would paint with them lol. Kids can be so cruel.

With a lot of plants, the resin contains the essential oils. They act like antiseptics: they push out germs and coat the flesh to keep the germs from entering the wound.

This is exactly what our blood does when we get wounded. It forces out, and the outward flow helps keep germs from entering the wound. It also contains militant cells that continue to repel bad germs when it has coated the flesh. It contains plasma, which is what dries and forms the scab to close the wound off from the elements. Plasma helps knit the skin cells back together, too.

Essential oils do for us what they do for the plants. They offer additional protection by coating the wound along with the blood. They also have antiviral, antiseptic and other microbial properties, which help the blood to repel dangerous germs that would cause infection. Some oils are thicker, and can turn into what I call a liquid bandaid. They harden, much like a scab, so you don't have to worry about a sticky mess, and they have even more ability than your plasma to help knit skin cells together for healing. I've used myrrh this way on papercuts lots of times. The pain lessened, and the skin didn't snag on anything.

Essential oils also promote healing with their aromatic properties. You can't help smelling the scent of oils when you are applying them to yourself and others. The fragrances are always soothing and balancing, and our bodies calm so that the healing process can begin. Trauma disappears as we inhale the lovely scents.

Most medical antiseptics do not behave this way. Although, contrary to how it can sound in alternative medicine sometimes, they do actually do what their labels say they do. I had an interesting conversation with my daughter a while back about this. She had told her teacher at school that antibiotics don't work. She was telling me that her teacher had argued with her about that. I told her her teacher was correct. Antibiotics do exactly what the labels say they do. The label says they kill bacteria, and that's true. The problem is that killing microbials is only part of the process.

Medical antiseptics do clean wounds and kill germs. But they're often not geared towards healing at all, so after you've used them on the wound, you have to use other synthetic ointments and whatnot in order to start the healing process. Most of the time, the antiseptic has killed off even the beneficial germs that would help in the healing process, and you're left with less than what you started with to begin healing.

Smoky Mountains or Sunburn?

When I first started this study, I used a 1/2 inch binder to keep my sheets of notes. One day I couldn't find that binder, so I started a new one, thinking I would eventually find the first and merge the two. Today, I found the first and cannot find the second. You can imagine my original aggravation. Now I just find it comically ironic. haha!

Page 63 in "The Chemistry of Essential Oils Made Simple" starts talking about how essential oils can affect sun exposure. They can both protect from the sun, and amplify the UV exposure. I find it amazing how God is able to kill two birds with one stone in so many areas of life.

A lot of desert plants contain essential oils with certain kinds of molecules called tetraterpenes and carotenoids. These molecules are a little larger than a lot of other essential oil molecules. They sometimes give color and pigment to the plants. They are able to lower the frequency of sun rays down to infrared levels, and then convert the energy to heat that can be expressed from the plant. This protects the plant from sunburn and dehydration at the same time!

One alcohol called platyphyllol is common in cajeput oil. It has been used in commercial sunscreens because it is so affective against UV exposure. Cajeput is melaleuca leucadendra, from the myrtle family.

Another way oils protect plants from dehydration is through expression. This is where the Great Smoky Mountains get their name: the trees and plants express oils into the air above them, which creates a thick haze, visible in the late afternoon. The sun's rays and heat are not able to fully penetrate this haze, and water evaporation is prevented.

Some plants require more sunlight than they normally receive. The citrus trees are a perfect example of this. The oils in unripe citrus rinds contain furanoids. These furanoids have a particular pentagon shape. They act like prisms and magnifying glasses to enhance UV exposure to the fruit. It ripens the fruit faster, and increases the sugar content. I find myself thinking that that must be why we have our citrus fair in the winter: these furanoids must be a huge contributor to citrus fruit ripening in an unlikely time of year. After the fruit is ripe, the furanoids disappear.

I didn't realize that this means that Young Living citrus oils must be pressed from unripe rinds then. Interesting how they still smell good enough to eat. I suppose it is possible that they press the oils from a combination of ripe and unripe rinds.... Interesting....

Because the citrus oils contain these furanoids, it is important that we do not use them on skin that is normally exposed to the sun during the day. Young Living uses the word "phototoxic" to let us know that they can cause accelerated UV exposure, which causes sunburn and even permanent pigment in the skin. If they must be used on normally exposed skin, it is important to wear appropriate clothes, like long sleeved shirts to cover the arms in the spring and summer months. Diluting these oils with a fatty oil does not counteract the phototoxicity to my knowledge.

It is important for me to note that citrus oils are extremely helpful with all manner of health needs. They are generally considered a pleasant fragrance, which is always soothing and uplifting. They are often used to help rowdy kids calm, and even to help people of all ages sleep better. They are extremely antiviral and antibacterial. The Young Living citrus oils are edible, and can be used to help the body decrease mucous, and cleanse the blood. Because they are very high in monoterpenes, they are very important in emotional sin repentance. Monoterpenes re-write correct information on the inside of the body's cells after sesquiterpenes have erased faulty information.

I say all that to say that citrus oils should NOT be avoided. In fact, partly because of their effectiveness and wide range of application, and partly because of the fact that they are some of the least expensive oils, I believe they should be used as much as possible. We just need to keep sun exposure in mind when we use them.

Essential Oils Protect

Essential oils offer protection from viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi.

Generally antibiotics are prescribed for bacterial infections. The big issue with taking antibiotics, however, is that they indiscriminately kill ALL bacteria. Our bodies are populated with large numbers of bacteria and yeasts and other organisms that actually keep us healthy. They help us digest our food, and they fight off harmful bacteria and other germs, besides performing other beneficial tasks inside our bodies. Like I mentioned in the last blog, antibiotics are made to perform only ONE function: they kill bacteria. Antibiotics don’t kill just the harmful bacteria. They kill the beneficial bacteria as well, so that after you have taken antibiotics to fight a bacterial infection, your immune system is compromised. You are now in a state of extra vulnerability to other bacteria and viruses that could cause you harm. This is because in their war against the bacteria that caused the infection you had, the antibiotics also maimed and killed the bacteria that normally would have helped in the battle. (It’s kinda like when we are affected by the fact that innocents are killed as a by-product of wars. We get mad at governments that wage wars with these ill-effects, but then we invite doctors to wage the same wars inside our own individual bodies.) In order to counter the effects of the antibiotics, large amounts of yogurt and other fermented/cultured foods and also raw veggies and fruits are recommended after they’ve been used.

Antibiotics and other pharmaceutical drugs also produce a state of acidity in the body. They push minerals and other nutrients out of the body sometimes in their performance of the task they were formulated to complete. This state of acidity creates a friendly environment for harmful bacteria and fungi to occupy.

Essential oils do not operate in the same way that antibiotics do. Oils continuously work toward a state of homeostasis in the body. Not only do they let the beneficial organisms stay where they are to keep us healthy, they actually help nourish them to bolster their performance. At the same time, they help to eliminate the conditions of the environment that harbored the harmful organisms. Oils bring our bodies to a slightly alkaline state, which harmful organisms cannot thrive in. Alkaline and acid conditions are opposites in health, and we want to have a good, balanced combination of both.

Even better, essential oils are able to attack viruses and fungi, which, as is commonly known, antibiotics are not capable of doing.

Just living around and breathing in essential oils daily helps to keep our bodies closer to a state of homeostasis, the balance that keeps us healthy.

When God created Adam and Eve, He placed them in a garden without buildings. They were walking around in a place where essential oils and other beneficial molecules abound in the air. This doesn’t necessarily mean we should all be living in gardens and give up our homes. It just shows how natural the idea is that essential oils contribute to our health.

And So Much More...

Sorry I haven't got this up soon enough. I'm a work in progress on personal schedules. :) I did my studying when I was supposed to, just didn't get it up here.

This next section almost describes essential oils as if they are alive. The role they play in plants actually trains them for the role they are to play in our bodies. They have been called the lifeblood of plants because they do exactly what our blood does. They circulate through tissues and cell walls, carrying nutrients in and carrying toxins out in plants and us, and even animals. They are known to carry oxygen into our cells, which cleanses us in itself. They are also able to remove pharmaceutical drugs, petrochemicals, and other things that interrupt communication between cells. They can chelate heavy metals, and all of this cleansing actually makes us more able to absorb our vitamins.

Essential oils act as hormones in plants, which helps them to function normally and keeps them producing vitamins and enzymes. They can carry messages between cells and keep them active. They are also able to do this in humans. We call them neurotransmitters, which is a category that encapsulates peptides, steroids, hormones, enzymes, vitamins, and other types of molecules that carry messages to cells. Ligand is another name for a molecule that fits into a cell receptor to give it a message. Essential oils always give the correct message to the correct receptor, which contributes to overall wellness and health.

Essential oils have what we call homeostatic intelligence. What this means is that they are able to bring our bodies into balance, which is called homeostasis. Homeostasis is when all systems in our bodies are functioning fully and properly, executing the perfect proportions of give and take. They are able to correct unhealthfulness while boosting healthfulness all at the same time. Here are some examples:

Oregano kills germs while keeping beneficial bacteria healthy in the body.
Angelica can stimulate a woman's uterus to contract for labor, or can calm it if it's premature.
Myrtle can stimulate or calm the thyroid, depending on what is needed.
Cinnamon will raise or lower blood sugar levels, depending on how it is off balance.

This particular characteristic of essential oils makes them so much more advanced than pharmaceutical drugs all by itself simply because drugs cannot do more than one task. They are specifically formulated to only do one task. There are drugs to lower thyroid function, and there are drugs to increase thyroid function. No one drug is prescribed to perform both tasks, because no one drug has been formulated to tackle both directions. This contributes to eventual and sometimes immediate imbalance in the body and leads to side effects and consequential health problems. Essential oils have no such effect on the body because they work toward balance by offsetting positives and negatives at the same time.

Essential oils eradicate viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungi in plants. They can produce unpleasant flavors and odors sometimes to repel plant predators. They can even act as herbicides to keep other plants from growing next to the plant they are in. Some plants in the desert release an oil into the soil around them to keep other plants a certain amount of distance away so that they have enough water for themselves. Tomato and tobacco plants emit an oil that attracts certain kinds of wasps that eat the big fat green worms that feed on the plants. However, different oils in the same plants attract the moth that lays the eggs for the worms. Lima beans in south America release an oil that attracts certain kinds of wasps that eat the spider mites that feed on them.

Essential oils that are normally harvested aren't the ones that attract wasps, fortunately! :) Some of them make great repellents though!

Fatty Oils

No, this isn't going to be as gross as it sounds. LOL

I will show some contrasts between essential oils and fatty oils from plants. This is all still coming from "The Chemistry of Essential Oils" by Dr. David Stewart.

Essential oils can be found anywhere in a plant, i.e. the stems, leaves, roots, seeds, etc. Fatty oils, which are also called vegetable oils, cooking oils, massage oils, and fatty "acids", are only found in the seeds of plants. For example, lauric acid, a fatty oil, is found in the seeds of the bay laurel tree, while laurus nobilis, an essential oil, comes from its leaves.

The molecules of fatty oils look like chains connected by carbon atoms at each link. The long chain structure is what makes these oils feel greasy. Essential oil molecules are usually more like hexagons and octagons. Their more rounded structure keeps them from slipping around on your fingers.

Fatty oils are not used by an adult plant as essential oils are. They are expressly for the next generation. They are used for germination and sprouting, and feeding the young plant until water and sunlight are available. Their larger molecules prevent them from circulating through plants and human bodies, and from passing through cell walls as essential oils are able to do. They are greasier than essential oils, and they can turn rancid. They are not antibacterial, antiviral, anti fungal, anti parasitic, or antiseptic as essential oils are.

There are two exceptions to this (that I personally am aware of), which are coconut and olive oils. These two fatty oils also have some essential molecules and are therefore slightly therapeutic while also being nourishing to the skin.

There are two main categories of fatty oils: saturated and unsaturated. Saturated means the molecules hold all the hydrogen atoms possible for each. There are only single bonds between each carbon atom when this is the case. There can be multiple bonds between carbon atoms and other types of atoms, just not between two carbon atoms. Unsaturated means there are one or more double bonds between some carbon atoms.

There are pictures of the molecules which maybe I will draw and scan in so you can see that even when a molecule has the same molecular weight as another molecule, it is the actual shape of the molecule that determines its distinct characteristics.

It is interesting to note that just as essential oils perform the same tasks in human bodies as they do in plants, so do fatty oils. Fatty oils are used for food for the seeds of plants, just as they are commonly used in our food.

Fatty oils are beneficial outside of the body as well. Because they do not penetrate the skin they are able to form a protective barrier against the elements. This is one reason why they are softening to the skin and used as moisturizers. Tamanu is a fatty oil which has been used for centuries as a natural sunscreen and moisturizer combined.

In application, if fatty oils are being used, they should always be applied after essential oils are applied. The molecules of essential oils adhere to the molecules of fatty oils, so by applying the fatty oils afterwards, you are giving the essential oils a chance to get into the body faster and sealing them off from evaporation. This principle can also be used to prevent injury. Some essential oils can get very warm on the skin as they pass through the cells at lightning speed. The smaller molecules of the essential oils group up on the large molecules of fatty oils, which causes their trip through the skin to slow down a little. I always have a vegetable oil on hand when using "hot" essential oils on children, and on more sensitive areas of the skin so that I can apply it if necessary to "cool" the site down. WATER SHOULD NEVER BE USED IN THIS TYPE OF SITUATION. It will drive the hot oil into the skin faster and create more pain.

Absolutes and Expressed Oils

Absolutes cannot be considered true essential oils, because they are not obtained from steam distillation. There are some plant oils that cannot sustain high temperatures and pressure and still maintain all their natural healing properties. For this reason, chemical solvents are used to extract the oily substances. Ethanol, methanol, benzene, and hexane are popular solvents to use, though only ethanol is non-toxic.

Absolutes contain more molecules of different sizes than most essential oils do. Even fatty oils are found sometimes.

Examples of absolutes are Jasmine, Neroli, Tolu or Peruvian Balsam, and Onycha, which is an oil used in the Bible. Tincture of benzoin is made from the same plant that Onycha comes from.

Citrus “essential” oils are part of a group called expressed oils. Technically these are not essential oils either, because they don’t come from steam distillation of plant material. Actually, these oils are pressed from the fruit rinds much like olive oil is pressed. Expressed oils can contain some larger molecules, and do not contain any artifacts since there is no heat involved.

What [Essential] Oils Do in Plants

This is chapter 2 in my chemistry book.

btw, I cannot get that spreadsheet up here. If I ever find out how to turn it into a picture, I'll do it, but for now, you're stuck having me send it through the email process.

So I just read this tiny first section in this chapter about actual essential oils. There are also oily substances called absolutes, and then there are the citrus oils which are technically not essential oils. These two other kinds of oils are often used in the same way as essential oils, but this one section of the chapter is specifically about essential oils. It was interesting to note a little while ago, though I forgot to mention it, that not every single plant on the earth has essential oils. They do have other types of fluids that perform the same tasks, but they're not always actual essential oils.

"An essential oil is the volatile lipid (oil) soluble portion of the fluids of a plant containing odiferous compounds produced by steam distillation of plant matter." page 51 Essential oils are sometimes called volatile oils, etheric oils, ethereal oils, aromatic oils, and sometimes essences, though that term is usually used for other types of plant substances.

Sometimes the heat of distillation produces "artifacts" which are not in the original plant, but can be therapeutic. Too much high heat will produce too many artifacts, which uses up the healing properties of the original compounds in the oil. Sometimes people short-cut with harsh solvents to remove the oils, which contaminates them and makes them actually harmful to humans.

Proper distillation, with the correct heat and pressure, is the closest we can get to extracting oils exactly as they are found in nature, but it's not completely exact. A few of the artifacts produced with lower heat actually add to the therapeutic properties of the oils.

The End of Books... For Now

So I finished the section in my chemistry book about books. I was going to move on, but I think it would be too hard to write about 2 different subjects. One interesting thing I learned this morning is that there are a couple great books on herbs and essential oils that are allopathic in origin. I wouldn't have thought that before, and at least my prior point of view is somewhat validated by the fact that only two or three books are listed in that category.

Another aspect I consider VERY important is that when allopathic manuals reference negative side effects of herbal or essential oil compounds, they are actually referencing SYNTHETIC versions of those compounds. However, when this information gets to us laymen, that distinction is not made, and because common labels are used in the terminology, it's nearly impossible for us to decipher that there is indeed a difference. One of the reasons why a distinction is not made, is because doctors and others trained in allopathy do not believe there is a difference between natural and synthetic compounds. They truly believe that they are able to fully manufacture the exact same thing as God does. I'll give you the example that was used in the book: Oil of Wintergreen is what they call the synthetic form of wintergreen essential oil. See how it basically just sounds like they must be talking about the same exact thing? You wouldn't even ask why they say it backwards, because it basically just sounds like a more medical or scientific way of saying "wintergreen oil".

I did finish my chart, and I'm going to try and find a way to get it up here. It is in excel format, and I think I may be able to use a friend's Adobe to turn it into a pdf if necessary. The chart is a list of essential oils with certain percentages of phenolpropanoids, sesquiterpenes, and monoterpenes, based on information from the Reference Guide for Essential Oils Tenth Edition. There is also a column that helps decipher pricing for practical reference. If anyone is interested, send me your email address.

I do not have much to write tonight. I read a lot in the chemistry book, but it was not a whole lot of information that I wish to disseminate here. He's still talking about books he recommends and doesn't. It's good for me to know, but it's not necessary for me to elaborate on at all times.

There was one recurring theme, however, that I noticed. One of the main similarities you will find when reading books written by people in the English school of thought is that the basis for their fears in using essential oils is shoddy clinical testing. I know shoddy is a strong word, and I do not mean to say that British scientists are not good at their jobs. What I mean is that it is normal for them to extract certain compounds out of essential oils and test them individually on animals, etc. As Dr. Stewart states in his book, this is about the equivalent of extracting compounds out of sea salt and calling them toxic if you get a bad test result. Are there toxic compounds in sea salt? Yes. Are there toxic compounds in some essential oils? Yes. The issue isn't that they're there. The issue is how they behave in that state of being paired with the other compounds (this pairing is call synergy) present in the salt and oils. People have been using salt ever since the world began. It's a cleanser, an antiseptic, an antibiotic, a food preservative, etc. Do the toxic chemicals in salt make salt toxic? Not when it's used properly.

The fact is that every substance in creation is an ecosystem in itself. Every compound depends on or suppresses another compound or more to make a fully therapeutic substance. Even the plants that are normally considered poisonous to us are used in homeopathy for healing. It's not normally a matter of using a substance, but a matter of how it's used. Essential oils very often have compounds which when separated out would prove harmful. However, in their synergistic state, they become therapeutic and can even counteract the same ailments the individual compounds would cause on their own. For example, myrrh is extremely high in furanoid compounds. Furanoid compounds usually cause photo-sensitivity, which means they make us very vulnerable to UV rays and we sunburn more when exposed to them. However, the other compounds in myrrh suppress these furanoid compounds in such a way that myrrh has actually been documented and used as an effective sunblock agent.

We assume that we are smarter than God, that since when we produce these compounds clinically and they are harmful, when God also produces them, they are harmful. We forget that He produced them first, and that He is smart enough to use them in such a way as to bring life instead of death. We think that by extracting certan compounds and turning them into pills we've improved upon His creation by making the compounds "more effective". In contrast, we've removed what makes them truly healthful.

It is wise to always be aware that God is THE genius, and that His original way needs no improvement, no matter how scary it sounds to our finite minds.

In case you didn't read my previous note, but you're interested, I wanted to let the new people I tagged know that "The Creation of Healing" is my first post on this subject. I won't tag you again unless you ask me to.

I don't have any new information to post this week. Last week I was reminded of a task I had thought of completing about a month ago. Well, maybe explaining this will give information. :)

The task is going through the "Reference Guide for Essential Oils, Tenth Edition" by Connie and Alan Higley to create a chart showing the percentages of phenolpropenoids, sesquiterpenes, and monoterpenes in the single oils. Single oils refers to oils straight from the plants, as opposed to blends available from Young Living which contain multiple single oils.

Why do I need a chart like this? What are phenolpropenoids, sesquiterpenes, and monoterpenes?

We have over 300,000,000,000 cells in our bodies. (I think. I can never remember if there is a hundred in there or not. I'll check some other time and correct myself if I'm wrong.) Each cell gets gooped up on the outside and inside, and subsequently the information in each cell gets overwritten with incorrect information. It's kinda like blinds. You know, they get dusty. If you dust them often, they'll clean up pretty nicely. If you wait too long, the dust turns into this goopy, sticky kind of dust that won't come off without soap and water. How the dust turned into a permanent mess I'm not completely sure, but I've seen it happen time and time again. The same thing happens with our cells. All of us are born into this world with some wrong information (Thanks, Adam and Eve!). On top of this, we were all born in a time where no one knows that eating In-N-Out will kill you through a slow, torturous death, so we do eat there, more than once in our lives. (In-N-Out is just one example of the poision -yes I said poison- that we eat repeatedly in our lives.) On top of this poisoning ourselves(Whether or not anyone reading this wants to think I'm right in calling these "foods" poisons, the science backs me up, so choose to disagree at your own risk.), we have traumatic experiences which affect us so badly that we're not able to see each whole experience for what it is, and we form false beliefs. Things like molestation, parents divorcing, or even a bully's tactics in school, a teacher telling you to hurry up and answer a question when you still don't completely understand it. Our worldview has the opportunity to change in each of these kinds of experiences. We form patterns of thought each time something happens to us, whether positive or negative, correct or incorrect, helpful or damaging. These patterns of thought eventually get written into our cells so that our whole body is affected by them. This is where certain instincts come from. Animals have instincts written into them by God. We have the power to write some of our own. This power was given to us by God when we were made in His image. Problem is, since we're not perfect Him, we write things backwards which causes death, rather than life. All of this un-food that we eat, and inaccurate thought patterns cause goop on the outsides and insides of our cells, and write wrong information on the insides of the cells.

Phenolpropenoids, sesquiterpenes, and monoterpenes are tools in God's toolbox that fix these kinds of problems. (Ever notice how often God uses 3's? Very interesting.) Phenolpropenoids act like trashmen. They clean the outside of each cell, just like trashmen come and pick up the trash from outside our homes. Sesquiterpenes act like maids. They clean the insides of our cells, just like maids clean the insides of our homes (well, not my home, too expensive lol). Monoterpenes act like moms. Moms train us to see the world how it is. They teach us how to live. They do the best they can to give us the right information. Monoterpenes do the same, only better. After the trashmen have cleaned the outsides of our cells, and the maids have cleaned the insides of our cells, then the path is cleared for the monoterpenes(moms) to come in and re-write the cells. Monoterpenes are a little better than our moms this way. They come straight from the Father, and have no free will to muddle up their minds, and so they always write correct information. They do it right every time.

There is lots of other information that branches off from this topic, so I'll stop here. Suffice it to say that this is the base reason for me making a chart on phenolpropenoids, sesquiterpenes, and monoterpenes. These chemicals, which are present in almost every single essential oil, make oils extremely effective in healing us. They heal the actual causes of illness, rather than just the symptoms like pills do.

I've got my notes, and I'll be entering the information into an excel spreadsheet. If I can do it neatly, I'll eventually post it here. Next week I'll try to get some reading in in addition to the chart, since the chart will prolly take me a few weeks to finalize. (I'm a little organized and like stuff neat.)

The Creation of Healing

My sister said something to me recently that spurred an idea in my head. She and her friends get together on one night a month to do scrap booking, because when else do a bunch of mothers have time to do such a thing? It put me in mind to set a similar schedule for my essential oil studies. From now on, my first order of Erev Shabbat is oil studies.

*For those who think I may be trespassing on fault of doing something not worshipful, I dare you to read the rest of this note and still think the same.

I'll warn you that my brain is very detail oriented and I like to explain things thoroughly. These notes may be too wordy for some of you. That is fine, I am not offended. Please know, though, that there IS really very good information in here.

NOTICE: ANY RECOMMENDATIONS MADE FOR USING ESSENTIAL OILS REFER ONLY TO YOUNG LIVING ESSENTIAL OILS. I'M NOT FAMILIAR ENOUGH WITH ANY OTHER COMPANY THAT CLAIMS TO PRODUCE THERAPEUTIC GRADE OILS TO TRUST THEIR WORD FOR IT. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT EAT ANY NON-YOUNG LIVING ESSENTIAL OILS EVER, UNLESS YOU KNOW THAT YOU KNOW THAT YOU KNOW THAT THERE ARE NO CHEMICALS. ALSO, DO NOT APPLY ANY TO YOUR SKIN WITHOUT VEGETABLE OR MASSAGE OILS INCLUDED, IF THEY ARE NOT YOUNG LIVING OILS.

I've been studying essential oils for nearly 3 years now, but I've become rusty in my break over the last several months. It has occurred to me repeatedly and my mother confirmed for me recently that this is my calling. I will strive for no license. I will not apply for any certificate of any kind. I will simply learn what I can in preparation for a time when God's people will not be able to call a doctor. I believe I will be strategically placed according to His purpose. Therefore, I must be prepared to fulfill His duties. I do not believe we'll be raptured up to Heaven at Messiah's second coming. For those who disagree, I'll be glad if you're right. If you're wrong, I'll be here helping you through whatever I can.

The book I decided to thoroughly read first is "The Chemistry of Essential Oils" by Dr. David Stewart. I say thoroughly because I've got several books which I've read a little of and never completely finished. One of the goals of this study schedule is to eliminate that list. Anyone who is interested may follow my studies here. I have tagged you all this time, but I won't tag you anymore so I'm not a pest. I'm not one who feels the need to be heard. I only wish for those who have ears to hear to hear. The greatest purpose for me even typing these notes up is to cement it in my own mind.

A few Scripture references were listed in the beginning of the book: Job 12:8, Psalm 19:1,3-4, Rom 1:20, Gen 1:3-4, 1 Thess 5:17-18, 21, and Gen 1:29,31. I believe if you look them up, you'll see that the perspective I'm coming at this study with is God first, science second.

The main intent of this book is to help me see God's hand in the creation of the molecules of essential oils. I believe this establishes a foundation which rips apart some believers' arguments that oils are a new-age thing.

Science was originally conjoined with religion. This is easy to research, as some scientists were executed by religious organizations for contradicting doctrines with their scientific findings. In order to save scientists' lives, decisions were made to separate science from religion. Because these two paths are searches for the Truth, man's separation of them has produced much spiritual death. We have scientists and doctors now ignoring the presence of Almighty God, and believers who are afraid to use herbs for healing. Science is now thought to be devoid of the spiritual; when in reality, there is no science at all without the Creator.

The portals through which oils may be absorbed are the lungs, the skin, the digestive tract, and the orifices. The digestive tract refers to oils being swallowed and carried through the digestive process. Lungs and skin are pretty self-explanatory. Orifices refers to the anus, the vagina, and the mouth holding oils rather than swallowing them. The ears are not considered orifices for the purposes of essential oils. The direct path to the brain is a sensitive one, not to be fiddled with in this manner.

There are 3 main schools of thought on how aromatherapy should be conducted. For those of you who have a problem with the word aromatherapy, here is a little etymology of sorts: aroma refers to smelling. Tony Roma's sound familiar? How about poetry where the word aroma is used rather than the very unromantic word smell, or scent, or odor. Therapy comes from a Greek word which is used many times in the New Testament referring to Messiah's healings. There is nothing new-age about the word aromatherapy. It's simply a word which refers to getting better from being sick through the nose, rather than swallowing pills.

The three schools of thought are German, British, and French. The Germans are very big on inhaling the oils. The molecules of essential oils are so infinitesimally small that they go almost directly into your blood stream as soon as you breath them in. This allows them to travel through your body at an extremely high rate of speed. Through this ability, any essential oil will have touched every single cell of your over-3-trillion-cell-body in 20 minutes or less every time. Inhalation is the Germans' favorite method.

The British are very skittish about essential oils. Forgive me for seeming so opinionated, but it is the only conclusion I have been able to come to, based on reading books from their perspective. According to the British, NO oils are allowed to be used without a carrier oil with one or two exceptions. Many, many very beneficial oils and highly antibiotic oils are strictly forbidden from use at all by many in the British school of thought. In my opinion, this is very unfortunate and ignorant, because these rules are based on a lot of faulty research. Most if not all of their studies are based on non-therapeutic grade oils. Oils like these can be non-organic, may and often do contain harsh chemicals, and are rarely extracted from plants in the proper manner. Basically these studies bring about as much good as wine studies done on grape juice would bring. The Britishers' favorite method of aromatherapy is massage with high dilutions of massage oils. I believe the lack of knowledge they have causes fear and is prohibitive to healing thoroughly. As the Scriptures state, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge."

The French school of thought is the one that I've been directed to adhere the most closely to, and because the British school of thought -to me- seems prohibitive of faith in God creating things to work properly, I have chosen to obey that directive. The French eat oils most, but also use the other portals in applying essential oils, including inhalation through the nose like the Germans do. They like to apply oils neat (which means without vegetable or massage oils included) on the skin, and rarely on occasion will actually inject oils into cancerous sites. The French base their methods on the belief that healing is not only physical, but emotion and spiritual as well. I personally have found support for this belief in Scripture.

It is extremely important that we use truly therapeutic grade oils in anointing for healing. It is pricier this way, kinda like Costco. Costco is way cheap per item, but you gotta buy it in bulk. So, you pay a higher price now to save in the long run. Oils run on a similar principle. Yes, it's what some (a lot) would call expensive. But though you may not see it now, it's a lot cheaper than paying for side effects 20 years from now.

Pharmacobiotechnology is the method of genetically manipulating plants and bacteria with human genes to produce medicine. Yes, human genes. When we take some of the medicines out on the market right now, we're eating human genes. That may not bother some of you, but it sounds very cannibal-ish to me. EW! Using this method, insulin has been produced from mushrooms and a strain of E. coli. Cortisone and Prednisone from soybeans and yams.

I think I'm going to see if I can check out "The Merck Index" by Susan Budavari, and "Advanced Aromatherapy" and "Medical Aromatherapy" by Kurt Schnaubelt in the library maybe. Those were books recommended in this one.

This is all I covered tonight.
